Credit Debt Collection Tailored to Reality TV

By Rob Sutter

The instant I think about reality television, my stomach starts to feel sickly. Yes, the shows involving Flavor Flav and Bret Michaels that were on VH1 might have been fun when I was a bit younger but times and tastes have changed over time. It's hard for me to watch old clips of these shows and find the enjoyment in people shouting expletives at one another. The credit debt collection business may be much more dignified in comparison but I still cannot believe the concept of a debt collecting reality show is being tossed about.

As told by New York Daily News, a credit debt collection reality show, as strange as it may sound, has been thrown around to various networks. The subject of the show focuses on a group of collectors encountering different debtors. It might not sound like a terrible idea at first but the madness truly begins once you realize these people will travel in a hearse bearing a "PAYUPNOW" license plate. This can cast a negative light on the debt collecting business and businesses like Rapid Recovery, which work hard, may suffer.

Perhaps in the hands of a capable producer who knows about the debt collection, the show itself may actually work. However, the man behind this idea starred on an episode of "JUNKies." For those who don't know, the show involved people dumpster diving. I'd like that idea to sink in for a just a moment, because the two professions are simply too different to compare. This would be akin to comparing "Psycho" by Alfred Hitchcock to "Bio-Dome" starring Pauly Shore; two vastly different films with two greatly different levels of success.

What completely defeats the purpose of reality TV is that there is no sense of reality to be had since these collectors are not what they seem. They are acting out as they are harassing debtors to pay what they owe. I can live with the fact that these people aren't what they say they are but to act out in a terrible way paints debt companies in a negative light. This, more than anything, makes better companies in the industry look bad.

It baffles me that such an idea could possibly exist in the world of reality TV. This says a lot, considering the many ideas that seem to float around in this realm of entertainment. Credit debt collecting is a far more serious profession, though, and it simply cannot be done without the proper minds behind it. Sadly, only the ill-informed seem to have the final say on how the show will go and my only hope is that it never sees the light of day.
