Some St Paul TV Repair Techniques

By Alison Wilcox

Many Americans spend a considerable amount of their free time watching television. While there are many St Paul TV repair technicians, a considerable saving could be made by attempting to fix it yourself. Faults are diverse in a modern TV set. It could be anything from unusual brightness, tilted images, the set not turning on or a white line across a black screen.

The complaint could be excessive brightness that cannot be turned down with the available adjustments from the user menu. Poor adjustments or drifts in the screen voltage is the most likely culprit though loosely soldered joints or short circuits on the CRT neck could cause similar symptoms. If the problem grew progressively, then adjusting settings on the circuit will fix the fault.

Most fly backs have a knob that can be turned with a screwdriver to change the voltage delivered to the tube. Though almost obsolete, some sets have adjustment points located aside from the Switched Mode Power Supply. A careful study with a multimeter may locate the malfunctioning component in circuits within the vicinity of the cathode ray tube. Otherwise a few turns on the potentiometer should correct this if no other damages are identified.

Fuzzy images will start developing if the 2 to 8 kV DC supply recommended for the cathode ray tube is not attained. Though adjustments on circuit components may bear fruit, it may save time and backbreaking labor if you replace the unit entirely. The high tension supply from the fly back is usually passed through voltage divider circuits comprising of high value resistors whose malfunction could produce similar symptoms.

Sometimes dirt and grime may also alter resistance values, more so on a humid day and a thorough cleaning with recommended solutions will fix minor defects. Whenever a client presents a job, do not attempt to open up the unit without conducting some preliminary investigations. If the power on indicator does not turn on when the button is depressed, attention should be paid to the high voltage section of the set.

As with most domestic appliances, the supply from the power cord will have to go through a fuse for safety purposes. Fuses will break the circuit whenever a short circuit in the preceding units causes too much current to be drawn from the wall socket supply. Pushbuttons may also get jammed with dirt, giving the technician a very hard time locating the faults.

The tuner serves the purpose of processing signals captured by the antennae. The surest signs of faulty reception are poor quality video along with the sound output. Do not position your set near a transistor radio to reduce chances of signal interference. Some image defects may be directly traced to the presence of strong magnetic fields such as when a speaker is adjacent to the set.

Caution must be exercised when the St Paul TV repair technician is taking apart a faulty appliance. The CRT and some capacitors can store considerable levels of voltage and this must be put in mind at all times. Observe basic workshop precautions such as wearing safety footwear and discarding metallic jewelry.
