The juris doctor degree however has some restrictions, which must be fulfilled. The major restriction is that the degree must be earned from an institution that is approved by the Bar Association of America. This is the association that governs most activities in this field in the US. In fact, it has information on all lawyers in the US hence, one seeking to hire one should consult the association. One can start practicing without any prior experience because it is not necessary. However, taking summer and part-time jobs may increase the likelihood of receiving job offers. Institutions that offer juris doctor degrees allow their students to handle cases so as to get experience. All activities the students do are supervised by a certified lawyer. One can get employment in both the public as well as the private sector. Self employment is also an option in this career.

This field requires people to have strong skills in verbal and written communication. They must also be able to do research and analyze data and situations. Computer skills are necessary to be able to use legal research software. Certification is mandatory after training if one needs to practice in a legal capacity.

In most cases, one needs to take the bar exam to get certified. This exam is administered after training by the governing body and it measures how competent and individual is. Passing the exam earns one the license to practice. The license is maintained by taking continuing education credits regularly.
