Different Types Of Engineering Jobs

By Carey Bourdier

Engineering is a varied field that offers an abundance of career choices for those who choose to make this subject their college major. Engineers are essential, skilled workers that complete many of our most crucial tasks. These workers ensure our safety, ensure that products are correctly manufactured and even ensure that our armed forces can do their best to protect us.

Civil engineering is a field that is quite common to all of us. Most people have seen an engineer standing in the road or working on a construction site with a theodolite, taking precise calculations about the grade and slope of the land. While an architect is the person who has the design ideas for a building, a home or a bridge, it is the engineer who ensures that these construction projects are completed correctly. Without precise calculations and monitoring, public safety would be in serious jeopardy, and we depend on civil engineers to complete these tasks.

The industrial engineer is the person who keeps the world moving quickly and more efficiently. These engineers are experts in knowing how to arrange people and equipment in such a way that promotes the highest possible output adhering to strict quality and safety standards. This engineer might handle tasks such as designing an efficient, safe operating room or perhaps set up an assembly line in a factory, ensuring that workers are in place and equipment has been calibrated.

If you are an imaginative person who enjoys inventing machines, then mechanical engineering is probably for you. Pretty much anything you use during the day has been designed by a mechanical engineer; from the car you drive to the fountain pen you use to sign your name. Mechanical engineers might design a wheelchair, a stapler or even a rocket. The next time you pump gas, wash your clothes, get ice from the freezer dispenser, toast a slice of bread or take the elevator instead of the stairs, be sure to mentally thank a mechanical engineer.

Even if you drive an electric car, you still depend on oil and gas. After all, all the food and goods you purchase had to get to the store somehow, and they probably were delivered using ships and vehicles that run on fossil fuels. A petroleum engineer is the important person who finds oil and gas reservoirs and works on the extraction technology needed to procure these important sources of energy.

The nuclear engineer works on a variety of complex issues, from maintaining safe conditions at nuclear power plants to coming up with safe ways to deal with nuclear waste. Some nuclear engineers design weapons and others spend their time researching nuclear fission. Still others work in medical fields, studying the effects of radiation on the body and also trying to create diagnostic tests for different diseases and medical conditions.
