The Clemson Tigers are the official athletic team of Clemson U, and play in Division 1 in the NCAA, as a team of the Atlantic Division in the Atlantic Coast League. They have their spot in 1986, when ball coach Walter Riggs first came to Tigerland, then represent the Clemson Agricultural University of S.C.. He came to the school from another tiger School. Riggs had a deep appreciation for the Princeton Tigers, so it was pronounced of this that he named the team's mascot Tiger the mascot.
The Carolina Gamecocks are Clemson's largest rival, in all each sport, not just football. They play each other every year, and the game receives a lot of attention across the country, and is regarded as one of the must see competition games each year. Their other in conference rivals includes Georgia Tech, NC State, Boston School and Miami.
The Clemson Tigers have won 59.1% of their games heading into the 2010 season, ranking them 34th all time. They have won the most ACC meeting championships at 14. They last won the title in 2011. Before joining the ACC, they also claimed 2 Southern Meeting titles. They have collaborated in 33 bowl games, winning 16, and in 1981 they became the first team in class history to win a countrywide championship, defeating Nebraska 22-15 in the Orange Bowl. They finished off that year 12-0 and were ranked 1 in the AP and coaches polls. They were also authorised by the NCAA the following year for having well over 150 documented violations.
One convention the football team does before it's home game, is the "most exciting 25 seconds in school football". The school ended their pre-game stretching and heads to the locker room, with 5 minutes till game time. At this point, there are three caravans that leave and bring the players to a peak of The Hill. At this point, the football team joins together at the lonely top and rubs "Howards Rock". The expiring band then plays Tiger Rag, and a canon is shot, with the Clemson's best barrel down the hill onto the field before 83,000 wild devotees on Clemson floormats.
Their famous Tiger Paw logo was introduced in 1970, and has been employed ever since then. It was impressed by a Bengal Tiger in the St. Louis Zoo. John Antonio created the brand which was developed by Helen Weaver, a member of an advertising firm in Greenville, SC. The SC Beta Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon brotherhood has sole rights to use the emblem and they paint it on plenty of the roads that are heading into Clemson. The Clemson Tigers floormats official colors are purple and orange. One proud tradition is their fight song, the Tiger Rag, "the song that shakes the southland". This song is played at all Clemson sporting occasions and following huge plays, and in the "most exciting 25 seconds in college football". The band spells out of Clemson at the end of the tune.
