Solar Power Is The New Black In Terms Of Energy Sources!

By Margaret Burgess

Solar power is an alternative energy source with tremendous economic and environmental benefits. If you're considering it for your home, here are the basics.

Living for the Sun

In essence, solar power is the process of converting sunlight into energy that can be used for free. Either a set of photovoltaic tiles or a group of platforms can be used to capture the sun's energy. The photovoltaic materials consist of positive and negative slices of material, often silicone, that react to the sun. Once the sunlight comes in contact with these cells, the resulting energy bounces off negative ions, effectively "slicing" them. The magnetic field created by this reaction is a kind of energy. An electric charge is created by the energy being ensnared by a series of tiny wires. The aforementioned wires are connected to an apparatus known as an inverter. Finally, the inverter would transform the negative energy into positive, thus making it a workable source of power.

Solar power is such a great source of power because you don't pay for it. Well, you would be paying for the systems that generate solar power, but not as much as you would have paid had you set it up more than ten years ago. The efficiency has also improved compared to the past decade or two, and of course, installation is no longer a bank-breaking expense. Most systems do not require much maintenance (and if any, the cost is inexpensive) and are durable enough to last up to five decade. Hope you're reining in that excitement!

Everybody and his cousin wants to go solar these days, and the process of going solar has since been sweetened by tax rebates that many US states are offering homeowners for choosing this form of power. On top of this, more than half of the states now mandate a concept known as "net metering."

You can save considerable amounts off your utility bill through net metering. Essentially, you are now allowed to "sell" power back to the utility companies at the same price they charge you. With solar power, this means you can simply feed your system into the utility grid during the day and then use regular energy at night. Since the utility meter will be moving backwards instead of forward, you are looking at a very real chance of a serious rebate, maybe even avoiding a utility bill in some cases. It is an easy and effective way to help you save money, which could be up to thousands of dollars per year, up to $40,000 to $100,000 for the entire lifespan of your system. More and more people are whispering about how great solar power is, and this is one good reason why.

It's been said many times, many ways, but you shouldn't be asking yourself whether you should use solar power or conventional electricity. You should be asking yourself why you haven't gotten around switching to solar power yet!
